Can't connect to the Internet

  1. Hello all, I just joined and I need some computer help. I am not very computer literate either so bear with me. My computer will no longer connect to the internet. I turned it off one night and the next morning it was gone. However, it connects to my router without a problem, it just says "connected with limited access." I am using my roommates computer to write this so obviously the internet is working, just not on my computer itself. Can someone please help me?

Probably worth trying to repair/reset your Winsock settings:

    • Open the command prompt (start>search for cmd and you should see it)
    • Once you have the black screen in front if you, enter netsh winsock reset
It'll probably take a moment or two and then tell you to reboot.

That did not work. It says "The requested operation requires elevation"

So what about removing AVG and installing MSE? Did you run the temp file cleaner?

Ah, you just have to run command prompt as an administrator, sorry about that. Right click the command prompt in the start menu and choose "Run as administrator." Then proceed as I mentioned above. It's somewhat of a shot in the dark, but I've had it resolve many similarly peculiar situations where I'm connected to my router and not the Internet.

I tried both and neither of them worked. Any other ideas?

You have to move the downloaded Temp file program to the desktop and run it from there. Have you removed AVG?

You are connected using wifi, but unable to received IP address from DHCP server. Try enabling/disabling your wireless adapter.
    • Press winkey(start menu)
    • type cmd.exe
    • press ctrl+shift+enter (run with administrative privileged)
    • click yes
    • netsh interface set interface name="Wireless Network Connection" admin=DISABLED
    • wait for it to finish (blinking keyboard cursor)
    • netsh interface set interface name="Wireless Network Connection" admin=ENABLED
    • wait for it to finish (blinking keyboard cursor)
    • check the network icon at the taskbar, if it is still identifying wait a bit more until connected
    • go back to command prompt, type "ping google.com", "ipconfig /all" w/o quotes, pastse results here

What activities did you do before the problem occured? Have you tried restarting the router or your computer?

When I typed ping google.com it says "ping request could not find host google.com. Please check the name and try again.
