Can't Get Into My Computer

Thanks for the update :grinthumb

I understand that you feel "professional service" is some type of Tech Shop where you pay money. I own and run a tech shop too, but my real expertise is freely given here on the forum (the shop's motto, is get it fixed same day, service and repairs) On the forum it does take a bit longer sometimes, but it's free, and exactly the same professional service. (but better as we inform you of every step)

For all others, free service here: UPDATED 8-step Viruses/Spyware/Malware Preliminary Removal Instructions

Check your computer before you take it out of the shop, or pay the big bucks.

This is a big problem, growing greater nationally day by day.

Be sure they know how to fix it, by fixing it.

I just want to thank you for this detail - while the thread showed a little frustration on the part of the starter, your patience in responding was great -
I got here by doing a search of the threads - (duh)
again - many thanks - it will be Friday before I can sit down and do the recovery b ut I think you have given me all of the tools

Kimsland -
re the 8 steps - the om's pc was so hosed I never did get through the 8 steps. I believe the virus was too far in - btw - I, too, had the password reset issues as described in this thread. The machine i'm working on had no admin pswd, had only one user - again no pswd. As I started into the 8 steps I got the message ' you do ot have ... permissions' I used free ware to crack the pswd - reset and could access for about 1 minute (make one sys file change or edit) before getting the error message that I did not have said permissions. I went through this several times.

I have a question about Java Update, It is always in the bottom right taskbar asking if I want to update. Do you think that this is safe and that I should go ahead and update? Or if I click to close it, it will come up later eventually asking the same thing. What are people's thoughts on Java Update? Is it safe?

So I got my computer back from the Computer Tech Shop. They basically said the computer was completely messed up by viruses and they basically just saved all the files and reformatted the computer so it was like it was new. ($90 for labor for something that took them prolly nothing to do) So now I have to find all the stuff, which my IT guy from my company set up back in 2003 when I moved into my huge 500k house, who has since quit the company about 8 months ago to start his own website, all of which I have no idea where the stuff is and where he put it. I find some stuff, and install Windows back on it, then Office, then some random disk (of which I know USB was on it, and sound), Norton Anti-Virus. My internet works. I still haven't found my HP laserjet disk..I'm sure I'll ask a question about that later. Anyway, I go and buy a Cruzer 8 GB Flash Drive (of which was only $20 at Wal-Mart, where the 4GB is $27 at Best Buy, and the 4 GB is $36 at Circuit City, marked down 25% due to bankruptcy to $27, so that is prolly why they went bankrupt, terrible service might have had something to do with it too). But anyway, I bring the 8 GB home, my mouse is connected into the USB port in the back of the computer and works fine, but anyway when I plug in the 8 GB Flash Drive in the back, the entire computer just automatically shuts down within a second. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

So in short, if you don't want to read all the above, I plug in my 8 GB Flash Drive and my computer shuts down instantly? How do I fix this?

Try other USB ports. If the same thing happens there, take the USB Thumb Drive back to the store and buy something that is not the SanDisk Cruzer. That problem is happening all over... and is nearly always the Cruzer.

I tried my computer at work, and it works fine.

Do you know what I should do. It works at my computer at work. I know it is not going to work when I get home.

Start with a can of compressed air to clean it out... Difluoroethane Gas also know as Dust Off.

If still under warranty, I would contact the seller or the manufacturer.

I'm not sure how to explain what to do. Because half way through you may just say I'll take it to a "professional" service

To me though it sounds as though it's likely the Service Packs or any Security update is now not done, and even more likely the manufacture drivers have not been installed, either correctly or at all.

Do all your Windows updates and Service packs, at Windows update http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
Search for all your drivers again, here's a good starting link: https://www.techspot.com/vb/topic117607.html
Don't install Norton, use Avira

And after all those hours of updates, then try the flash drive again

Hey Kimsland -
thanks for the link - I had found it through searching this site - but I appreciate your giving me the extra send!
well - its friday nite and i am starting into recover of the om's pc. wish me luck!

I'm back. So my co-worker's computer won't turn on. The problem is the power button, it is on the front. About 4 months ago, had the same problem, but we got it back on. Then just kept it on for 4 months. And today the power went out and we couldn't get it to turn back on. Any advice?

Replace the case. You will have other problems
Or attach an external switch if budget is tight
Or, if you are lucky, replace the switch that fits the case... Often when you remove the fancy button that fits the color of the case, you find that the power switches are very similar, and will even fit the same screw hole... so just look for a switch with a button that fits.

Alright, i hooked it up again. It turns on, but the light stays orange and nothing on the screen will appear. What do I do if the light is orange.
