I have an ASUS laptop F8S that will not read the dvd/rw. It is recognized by both the bios & os but will not read a boot disk, a dvd or audio cd. Vista os.

You can't boot off a bootable disk? Then the drive is dead or you have your BIOS set to not boot off of an optical disk.

How old is that Asus F8S, and how often was the DVD drive used for copying or games. If used for either of those approaching 55 to 85 hours, it is time to start looking for replacements. A great number of laptop DVD drives wear out after 40 hours of use.
