hi. my disc drive stopped working. i know enough about computers to know that the driver has stopped being effective... how do i find out what cd drive i have? i knew before but i have forgotten the last digits. its matshita (insert numbers sequence here)

You don't have to get the exact same brand do you? What kind of computer do you have?

You can type the word, dxdiag, in the Run box of the Start menu and click OK. Save the report and then read the text file. Look for "Disk & DVD/CD-ROM Drives" and it will show what you have although sometimes the names don't match the brand.

Yes optical drives do fail. Under the System in the Control Panel you click on Device Manager then look for your DVD/CD expand that it should tell you what model you have. Now take that info and type it into google the information should appear. Other than that, you would need to open your case and see if you have IDE or SATA unit.
