CDRW refuses to recognize disks reliably

For some time now I've noticed that much of the time my BenQ CDRW drive will only recognize and read disks occasionally, regardless of the type (RW's, music, games etc). I can't figure out why it would work sometimes and not other times; restarting sometimes helps but not always.

I have this drive installed as the slave to a DVD-Rom which works fine.

Any suggestions?

I used to have a BenQ CDRW drive that started doing exactly the same thing. It just got worse and worse. In the end I just replaced it.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Thankfully, optical drives are very cheap these days.
