apple ibeacon ces CES is set to kick of its annual festivities next week, bringing together the biggest names in tech from around the world. This year, the event's coordinators are introducing a scavenger hunt for attendees using Apple's iBeacon technology.

As you might be imagining, the scavenger hunt will focus on getting attendees to the most important exhibits around the show floor and as a way to introduce people to iBeacon's location sensor tech. "This promotional scavenger hunt demonstrates our commitment to leveraging the latest in emerging technologies, making CES the most interactive and engaging technology event of the year," CEA (Consumer Electronics Association) senior VP of communications and strategic relationships Jeff Joseph said recently

After downloading the CES mobile app onto their Android or iOS devices, participants will then be directed around the show floor to collect iBeacon badges, with the first three to collect them all winning a prize. As some have said, this will be one of the very first commercial uses of iBeacon technology available on the Android platform. Joseph continued with "This promotion is a fun and novel way to introduce attendees to iBeacon technology and encourage participants to visit important exhibits across the show floor."

The CEA has teamed up with iBeacon hub hardware and tech makers Radius Networks and Texas Instruments for this promotion. The beacons send off short-range transmitters that speak with compatible mobile devices once they get within 100 feet or so.

While at this point it can seem like just another way for companies to draw our attention, Radius is keen on exploring this kind of technology for uses outside of just advertising."This is one of the coolest proximity-aware apps we have worked on," Marc Wallace, the Radius Networks CEO, said. "This is also one of the first, tangible applications that leverages iBeacon technology. And it is a great example of how iBeacon technology is not just about advertising as it is about bringing new and innovative solutions to the marketplace."

CES is set to kick off next week, be sure to stay tuned for all the biggest announcements from the show.
