Chinese chipmaker is getting close to release a GPU that approximates Nvidia's GeForce...

Good news. We seriously need new players in the GPU market. I'd rather see western, Japanese or Korean companies than Chinese, but beggars can't be choosers.

However, even if these new GPUs turn out to actually perform as advertised and are DirectX / Vulkan compatible, in the current market most cards will probably end up in the clutches of miners and scalpers.

Also, if they turn out to be suitable for PC gaming (I.e. DirectX / Vulkan compatible), I wonder about drivers. Will their drivers automatically install Baidu? :p

Performance differences aside, the biggest step which can meaningfully bring Chinese industries to total independence from imported technologies, is new materials/methods for chip manufacturing such as carbon nano tubes based etc. and they've been investing heavily in this (as one can argue everyone is on the same level playing field in this area). I think by end of this decade, there is good probability that silicon based chip manufacturing will have competition from alternatives in some form.

Can you imagine the built in spying China will have in this device? Imagine having this in millions of PC's phoning home to China.

You mean like Windows is phoning home to US?

They should bee benchmarking the 3080. No one cares about the 1080.

Maybe people that don't need 3080 do?! Besides, not everyone has $300 to shell out of for 1050Ti :D (let alone thousands for 3080 or whatever % it's overpriced atm)

Odd how everyone forgot that AMD sold its Zen1 Arch to China to use in their own cards and here is the result. and to the valid points in the comments, ALL GOVERNMENT SPYING is bad and should be happening to its own citizens as I do understand that some is not malicious but we all know its abused but the attempt of making us all serfs with the masks/DNA therapy is backfiring on them

I suspect only the graphics in China will become more affordable since our b!tch a$$ government started the trade war against China

I don't care about China spying on me, as long as they don't outsource their spying analysts to my country. It's much worse to have your neighbor spying on you (with the help of foreign tech) than someone 10,000 km away from me, whom I'll never meet in my life.

The biggest problem I have with companies like Google spying on us is that they hire ordinary people, and outsource their staff everywhere, some may even be your neighbors, and give them access to your data.

In that regard, Chinese are a lesser problem, as long as they keep their data for themselves and their communist party officials. To me, an ideal spying entity would be aliens from another galaxy. I really couldn't care less if they are watching me :)

While I agree. I think one day we will all have to learn how to speak Chinese. And then your credit rating will be based on your social status :)
