Disconnect everything and put it in the oven. (maybe order an identical motherboard before just incase something goes horribly wrong :))

You might try clearing CMOS settings (see here but please first double check that P4GV-LA is indeed the motherboard)

I updated the network drivers and even with WOL enabled now it still struggles. It's almost like it needs to warm up? If I leave it off and unplugged for 5 mins then it only takes 1 - 2 goes to get it to boot. However if I leave it for 30 mins then it takes a good 4-6 goes to turn it on. I just replaced all the thermal grease on the CPU, but nothing has changed.

Do you think it may be motherboard problems?

Considering the BIOS but am not sure it will solve the issue, may just cause more problems

Oops you guys posted before I refreshed. Have cleared the CMOS, no changes.

Oven? I think it may go horribly wrong anyway:p

If you have microfractures in the solder joints it could expand with heat enough to make contact. Oven trick gets it hot enough to permanently fuse the microfractures back together.

Yes I think it is the motherboard.

Hi all glad I found this forum. I'm having almost the same problem only now mine won't even get the bio up. It tries to but IMMEDIATELY goes into stand-by state. Any ideas on how I can get past so I can try the bio? You think my problem might be the graphics card? It is an NVIDIA pro and my system is an Athlon64 Dual Core 3800 with Windows Server 2008 standard.

thank you to any one with ANY suggestions.

    Just an update.

Ruled the problem as motherboard, customer has an extended warranty which can come through us because we are HP Service Engineers.

Awaiting the replacement parts. Thanks for everyone's input :)

Trence5, you might want to have a look at this thread here

Bake it now, you've got a replacement on the way, what is the worst that could happen?

Put it on a cookie sheet covered in aluminum foil, and prop it up with aluminum foil balls.

Haha I will give that a go this weekend (don't have an oven at work). Have to wait for the customer to bring back the machine.

    Will keep you updated.

When I turn it on this is what I get: 1 long, 2 short
and the link you recommended me said this: "Failure in video system- An error was encountered in the video BIOS ROM, or a horizontal retrace failure has been encountered" That would mean a new video card right|?
  11. snowchick7669 TechSpot Enthusiast

If that's the correct beep code, then it's more probable it is the video card then other components.

    Is it still under warranty?

Unfortunately, no. I got it about 2 years ago I think.
