I did my best to find the programs listed. perhaps I was too generous and unchecked boxes that I shouldn't have. After the reboot I received this warning message:

"You have used the System configuration Utility to make changes to the way Windows starts. The System Configuration Utility is currently in Diagnostic or Selective Sartup mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utlity to run every time Windows starts.Choose the Normal Startup mode on the General tab to start Windows normally and undo the changes you made using the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts."

Do I need to worry about this?

computer running a little better. Still having problems opening IE. I'm planning to upgrade to Office 2010 soon from 2003, do you think this will make a difference?

That is the normal message you will get. There is a box you can check so that you do not get that message each reboot.

Have you tried uninstalling IE7 from add/remove, downloading it again and re-installing it?

Thanks for the idea. I did that this morning but it seems to have had no effect on things. i still need to open IE, get through the process of it becoming unresponsive and then taking forever to close. the second time I open IE it seems to be fine.

Not really sure what else you can do to rectify the problem. You can possibly try disabling all of the Add-Ons in IE to see if one of them are causing the problem.
Also, if you go to Internet Options and then the Advanced Tab, you can try resetting IE's settings.

You have been such a huge help. I've been living with the IE issue for a while so I'm used to it. Thank you so much for all your help. Things seem to be running more smoothly and I'm greatful for that.

No worries :).

To remove all of the tools we used and the files and folders they created, please do the following:
Please download OTC by OldTimer:
Save it to your Desktop.
Double click OTC.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes. The tool will delete itself once it finishes.

Thank you so much for all your help. things are running better than ever and IE seems to be cooperating more often.
