Computer wont start it shuts down

Hi im new this site iv got a proble i have a dell desktop 4 years old it wont start up it loads to the windows xp screen then stops then shuts down.I tried in safe mode and does the same thing.it never makes it to the icons.i took out one of the extra hard drives and one of the dvd burners to see if it would start but it wontit just wont boot up does anyone know what could be causing this could it be the power supply all the fans work im stumped thanks dutrem

Hi dutem and welcome to TechSpot

Yes this can be software or hardware related (ie Power Supply)

But I think your best option is to start with software.

Do you have the Windows setup CD ?
If so, you will need to start your computer with it and go to the Recovery console (the black Dos screen basically)
Once there, try doing a Check Disk, command line will be:
chkdsk /r

Once Check Disk has finished repairing any files, type Exit and restart your computer (hopefully it will start normally)
