My vista ultimate just updated something. When I went to re-start it gives the following message:

    Configuring updates: Stage 3 of 3 - 0% complete.
Do not turn off your computer.

    It never changes from 0%.
The little wheely thing just keeps on spinning.
It has been over 3 hours.
    What do I do?

Turn it off from the power switch and back again (or press reset).

I had the same issue with my second Vista installation, it was stuck on the 3rd stage for about an hour and a half. I turned the PC off and back on. It started normally (didn't even complain about improper shutdown), restarted once or twice, then said all updates were successfully installed.

Typical problem with the Ultimate version. As Mictlantecuhtli suggests, shut it down. Cold Boot. No harm will be done.

Thanks mic and ray. That worked. Maybe the message should read:

"Do not turn off your computer unless you have to because Vista Ultimate has screwed up again."

Then, I would not have had to ask for help.

Maybe in Service Pack 2, they will have it fixed. It is not fixed in Service Pack 1
