Controlling cd/dvd drive speed

  1. Does anyone know of a good free utility to control the speed of an optical drive--other than the tools supplied with Nero, AnyDVD or CDBremse (aka CD Throttle)? The aforementioned products are fine, I guess..., but I want something completely free from being commercial. Don't want my htpc to sound like an airplane when playing a movie. Can't understand why default read speeds needs so much spin when a movie can be played without hiccups at merely 1x speed. I would like 2x speed for caching to memory. A drive remains silent at 2x.
