Could not able to logon to windows XP

I could not able to logon to windows XP. It is saying windows/System32/config/sytem file is corrupted. I tried to use the recovery console using my windows XP installation CD and selecting repair option. I could able to get c:\> prompt. After that none of the dos commands are working at c:\> like md/mkdir, cp or any other commands. When I tried these commands it was saying access denied. Any help in this regard is a big help.

Try doing the fast repair....not from the console. And not all standard dos commands work in console mode.
