cpu, mobo, or psu?

  1. i have an XFX 680i mobo and a Q6600 processor.

i took everything out except the processor/fan/heatsink. my problem is that when i turn it on it immediately shuts itself off.

however when i unplug the cpu power socket it will start up and run, but give no beeps.

i plug it back in and it does the same shut-off thing.

the PSU fan runs, but i havent tested it with a voltage meter. i don't have any spare parts to test these out on because my old computer is really old and doesnt support these parts.

no beeps ever occur during these processes. could the processor be defected? or does that sound like a motherboard problem?

CMOS Clear, also what GPU and PSU do you have?

Umm... the CPU power socket? You mean, for the front panel?

It could be that you've orientated it wrong, and you're actually shorting either the power or reset pins.
