The above combination is fine but I'll suggest that since you're pretty much putting together a new rig you should look at a DDR3 setup.

ok you have convinced me! i will go with ddr3. the set up you suggested above will be perfect.

"Future proof your pc"........it's the way forward..............lol who's kidding who?......I dunno but i like AM3 and DDR3...............and windows 7

yeah, windows 7 is still too "fresh" for me. i like to let these things season a bit. (as an added advantage, the price comes down too)

$30 with student discount, I find it unlikely that it will go down much. Oh and windows will update itself if needed, in case you didn't know.

true, price is not really the issue (even tho i may not be eligible for any discounts) just change is not always easy :)

not sure what you mean...

I took 2 years to try xp as i was happy with 98. I never liked Vista , No matter what varient it came in.
But Win7 ,well , even suprised me. Stable and smooth even for a "Fresh" O/S....but like other O/S's before , time will tell. Try it on a spare pc and see then let the forum know how you did....

i am sure that will happen. i may be struck down for admitting this, but the truth is i have been trying to move 100% to linux fo years now. trouble is people keep coming up with such damn good software for windows. so i will be running both for a while yet. anyhoo, we digress :)

I have been trying to as well :) So you are not alone. Games and a couple photo editing programs is what is holding me back. Although i will say i have been pleased with Win 7 as well (have it at home).
