Cancel the AVG scan for the moment, it really shouldn`t be taking that long to complete. You`d probably be better of sorting your antivirus programme problem out as I think it could be the source of your problems. It`s probably also the source of the AVG scan taking forever.

Basically what I`m saying is I think you have a software conflict caused by more than one antivirus programme being run at the same time. Once your antivirus software has been sorted, we`ll have a better idea of what`s causing your problem.

It was asked earlier in the thread by SNGX, but maybe you missed it. What process is taking up your cpu resources? Please let us know.

Regards Howard :)

I paused the scan for now, it is getting held up scanning tons of stuff in the recently uninstalled Norton folder, how do I get it to stop and get you a log to scan? Also do you want another HJT log too? Somehow now my CPU stuff went down...it's floating at around 15-30% now...maybe it was me dumping Norton?

Yes, please post a HJT log. You might as well exit the AVG Antispyware programme for now. I`d still like to know what process is/was hogging your cpu.

I dont know what program it was, to be honest, maybe it was Norton spiking, constantly asking em to renew itself? I'm not sure, I am still running the AVG and I wanna let it get done and post the log tomorrow...here is the HJT this I just ran, any thougts?

What version of Norton were you running? Norton is blamed for a lot of ills, and I have been witness to many, but when a system goes sour and Norton is installed, things that might be simple to diagnose now become complicated. AVG should only take 20-45 minutes on it's first scan. On scans after that only 10 minutes is all. Norton 360 only took 20 minutes on it's first scan here... on my system

I was using Norton 2005 cause there was some issue with 2006, so I re installed 2005, never got 2007 tho, so that is prolly where my problems came into play

After AVG has finished scanning, do the following.

Go to add remove programmes in your control panel and uninstall anything to do with(if there).

Symantec
LiveUpdate
SYMNET~1

Close control panel.

Click start/run and type services.msc into the run box and press the enter key.

When the window appears, maximise it. Double click on the following services(if there) and select stop if they are running. Set the startup type to disabled. Click apply/ok for each service you disable.

Symantec Network Drivers Service
LiveUpdate
Automatic LiveUpdate Scheduler

Close the services window.

Open your task manager, by holding down the ctrl and alt keys and pressing the delete key.

Click on the processes tab and end process for(if there).

SNDSrvc.exe
LUCOMS~1.EXE
ALUSchedulerSvc.exe

Close task manager.

Run HJT with no other programmes open(except notepad). Click the scan button. Have HJT fix the following, by placing a tick in the little box next to(if there).

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Symantec NetDriver Monitor] C:\PROGRA~1\SYMNET~1\SNDMon.exe /Consumer

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [!AVG Anti-Spyware] "C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\avgas.exe" /minimized

O23 - Service: Automatic LiveUpdate Scheduler - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUSchedulerSvc.exe

O23 - Service: LiveUpdate - Symantec Corporation - C:\PROGRA~1\Symantec\LIVEUP~1\LUCOMS~1.EXE

O23 - Service: Symantec Network Drivers Service (SNDSrvc) - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SNDSrvc.exe

Click on the fix checked button.

Close HJT.

Locate and delete the following bold files and/or directories(if there).

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared<Delete the entire folder.
C:\PROGRA~1\Symantec<Delet the entire folder.

Reboot your system and post a fresh HJT log. Let me know how your system is running.

Here is my latest log, I will run Ewido also and see if it runs any quicker now that Norton/Symantec are 100% gone from the system. I will post that as soon as it is done, can anyone start talking about how to get my HD space back on ym C drive? I was going to let the box defragg while I slept....is that cool?

Regardless of the outcome, i wanna thank Howard and all the other who offered input here. I had a realy bad day cause of this and you guys helped me out a lot...so thank you!! I appreciate it...cheers mate!

EDIT: I have other Hard drive questions involving partitions and Drive letters and stuff I need help on for another day as soon as I get some of this HD space back, but I suppose that will be for the HD side of the forums and not in here...but don't be shocked to see a new thread by me in the next 48 hrs lol

Open your task manager, by holding down the ctrl and alt keys and pressing the delete key.

I think I already have a Firewall program. Doesn't Windows give you one automatically on XP? If so can't I just enable that somehow? But what would u recommend personally?

Ewido got done eventually last nite so u can look at that if you need to and lemme know (If anything) what to do. I did the above stuff and fixed and deleted the other problems.

Well, last nite I deleted stuff and had 1.5 gb and am back to 156 MB again, any ideas on what is doing this? It's pissing me off hardcore...

Something is eating what available space I get free, anyone got any ideas on what is eating the free space I have?

Hey Bark4Soul,
back up your important stuff and prepare to do a format and fresh install of your OS. The Windows XP firewall is located in the Control Panel, Security Center, if you are running XP, SP2. You have still got some wierd things happening, maybe even an impending hard drive failure. I never trust any program or utility to absolutely get rid of everything that is bad. Only an all zero's write or format of a C drive will do that

Yeah I just moved and dont have my XP disk on it. Are there any other ways to try and fix this somehow?

Have HJT fix these Entries.

Fix all O8 - Extra context menu item: entries.

Then boot into safe mode and delete the following.

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\WeatherBug<Delete the entire folder.

Reboot into normal mode and do the following.

Turn off system restore.(XP/ME only) See how HERE.

Now, turn system restore back on again.

If that doesn`t help, I agree with Tmagic650, that you should backup your important data.

Run your hard drive manufacturers diagnostic utility. If you can`t find it, take a look at this thread HERE.

Let us know the results.

Regards Howard :)

Find that disk. After going through all this I would make sure I had one handy. Do what Howard has just posted. The System Restore can "hide" some nasties from being cleaned

I forgot to add, the Windows firewall is crap, you`d be better of with one of the free firewall programmes I linked to.

Regards Howard :)

You're right Howard,
given the trouble Bark4Soul is having, he really needs good advise. Every time I turn around, someone is saying turn the Windows firewall off. I hesitate to say that I was using Norton Internet Security 2006, before I installed Norton 360, that I use now, for handling the firewall's duties

Well I have run my diagnostic tools from Western Digital on my C drive, it has passed, I also ran chkdsk, how in that do I make it repair if I need to? When I hit enter after running chkdsk it says it's on READ only mode, not repair...can someone help me? Anyone think it can repair anything for me? Or does anyone have WD HD's and can tell me how to repair with that diag. tool?

Question: Do I need to have the Windows disk to preform the /r or /f commands to chkdsk? I wanna repair it if I can and try and get back my HD space, I am currently defragging it atm

Have you done what Howard asked you to do in his post? In order for checkdisk to repair, you have to run it in DOS. What drive diagnostic did you run on your drive? Did you check it for it's SMART status?

We should call this thread "Bark4Soul's Personal school of computer repair"...

Run a complete disk check. Click start/run and type chkdsk /f /r and press the enter key. Follow the onscreen prompts and reboot your computer. Windows will check your hard drive for problems. Depending on the size of your hard drive, this can take quite some time.

Regards Howard :)

Hahah yeah I know I suck at life, no I ran it in windows and after it was done it just closed automatically...so I need to run it in dos, that makes sense.! Lemme try that

Well it's been a few days but I found out what it was. My Linksys Wireless G card comes with a Network Monitor that has a BAD memory leak, I started a diff thread in hopes of some other Linksys uer could help me. I looked ALL over the net and no one seems to know. But THAT is what was screwing with my windows, also Norton was writing copies of it's quarantined viruses, which was eating my HD, I have fixed that, I am formatting soon as soon as my XP disk arrives. Any idea how to get rid of this monitor? I have it disabled but it's always in the taskbar, it's a WMP54G if you google like "WMP54G memory leak" you'll see tons of forums complaining about it.

Anyways, the thing is, it's not a PROGRAM that u can just close, it's not in the task manager when u hit control+alt+delete and I have to reboot randomly when it goes nuts, it eats up all my memory in like 2 hours time. Any ideas from the great Howard? Ever heard about this before? I even tried older drivers, I am still stuck, but u took care of 90% of this for me, thanx!
