These days my cpu is really noisy. It used to be that when it was doing a lot of work the fan would kick in and it would hum loudly until it cooled off, but now it's really noisy pretty much all the time, even when its not eating cpu power.

any insight?

Well, CPUs don't normally becme noisy. This is because they don't have any moving parts.

Now, if the CPU fan has become noisy, this could be for any of several reasons.

1: The fan is going bad.

2. The CPU heatsink is dirty

3. The CPU is actually running at at high percentage duty cycle. (Possibly malware? This needs to be checked with the Task manager).

4. You've inadvertently set the BIOS to run the fans at full, by over riding the "smart fan" controls.

5. It is, after all Summer. (At least in the northern hemisphere).

Are you sure we're not talking about the PSU?

As above, though its likely either worn out, and/or blocked up and in need of a good clean.
