Delete \Windows\Installer files?

    Hi;
    I just noticed that my Windows XP Pro (sp3) \Windows\Installer folder is 1.3Gigs!
    There are about 50 folders with cryptic names, and a couple hundred files.
    Does Windows need these files to uninstall the app later, or is it safe to remove them?
