Dell d400 no boot device found press F1 / F2

Hi All,

I have a d400 laptop but without the cd drive so i cant just boot from disc and reinstall, When I switch the laptop on I get the following message and 2 beeps:

'No bootable device(s) selected'

'strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for set-up utility'

I then retry the boot, but get the same message appearing on screen.

I then try the diagnostics and it fails on a part, Does anyone have any suggestions? ive inserted a usb stick with xp on it but if i try boot from that it says disc error, any ideas or is the laptop doomed?

Regards

Can you press F2 and get into the setup? If so, check to see if the hard drive is detected in the bios. Most likely the hard drive is bad. You might be able to use an external USB CD/DVD drive to re-install Windows after the hard drive is replaced
