Sounds like a short somewhere. I have had this happen on other models from a shorted Fan, a burned Power Regulator, a Failed Power control board, and a bad Power Jack where the AC Adapter plugs in. The first 3 were easily fixed by replacing the bad part, but the last needs the services of a tech who has Surface Mount Soldering Tools to solder on a new Power Jack. The only other thing I can think of is someone somehow spilled liquid on it. If so, new m'board time!!

However, be advised that official Dell refurbs as sold through at least 15 vendors, have had the Service Tag changed in the BIOS so that Dell can tell when the computer was sold without access to Dell services... They remove the old Service Tag, then replace it with another tag that means "This is a refubished Dell sold without warranty or tech support." The original seller is obligated to inform all those potential customers that it is sold without support.

    Hi Paragon,
I have disassembled my D600 Latitude, down to the motherboard. Having trouble finding that chip to perform the paper clip procedure. everything is covered with black plastic. How can I find it?
  4. Paragon33 Newcomer, in training Posts: 343

It is under ther the PCMCIA Hardware and then under the the black insulation sheet. It reportedly is a 24C04N

    Chip pin Pairs to short

    8-7-6-5

    24C04N

    1-2-3-4
This is the layout of the pins by number. Either Pin sets 3/6 or 4/5 are the ones to short. You will have to probably short more than once to get to the Manufacturing Mode screen, and you must delay the short until after Power On with a delay of from 1-6 seconds.

    Hi Howard,
I have Dell D600 and attempting to perform to shorting technique, what pins do I short on the 24C04N chip? I think I short the wrong ones...admin pw remains, shorted 5 & 6, can anyone advise me on this issue? Thanks

I have told you before, short either pin set 4/5 or 3/6. 3 or 4 are grounds, 5 or 6 are the active pins you are needing to ground at the proper time
