  1. After I login to my Windows XP desktop with my account, the desktop comes up with only the wallpaper displayed. No icons, no taskbar, and when I press CTRL+ALT+DEL to get to the task manager, it just shows the busy hourglass with the mouse pointer and doesn't bring up anything.

Tried running MBAM and SuperAntiSpyware, which found some viruses and removed them, however it still doesn't work.

All the advice I have found so far involves opening taskmanager, which I am unable to do. Any ideas?

Your best immediate approach is an update-in-place. I suspect you will have had some of your system destroyed by the malware you found. An update-in-place or repair install should get those bits repaired, but some malware can be very hard to shift and things could rapidly go wrong again.

All things point to a complete re-install being required in the near future, so get going on backing-up all your important data while you still can.
