Just wondering if it is possible to run 16GB (2x8GB) RAM on an old motherboard which specifies max 2x4GB RAM. I understand that sometimes they are reluctant to officially support more RAM that's available in the market at the time of release and just hoping that it is possible to fit in more.

Has anyone tried putting in more RAM than the motherboard has recommended?

I am not willing to buy new sticks of RAM, try it and find that it doesn't work. Unfortunately I do not have another computer that has/want that much RAM...

After doing more digging I come to the conclusion it's probably not possible without A LOT of work and investment.
