Directory is Corrupt And Unreadable

  1. I have an external hard drive that failed today. I presume it's because I have a loose USB cable, and it got pulled out while the drive was being used. Anyway, there's information on that drive that I really do not want to lose. Windows actually asked me to format the drive, but I don't want to do that. Is there anything I can do to get my data back?

I thought about formatting and then using a data recovery program, but there's no guarantee that I'll get all my data back, is there?

Oh, and I can hear the drive spinning just fine, so I don't think it's gone beyond hope. I'm pretty sure a format would put it back to a state where I can use it...it's just that all my data will be gone.
