Hang on, that 3rd HardDrive it does have an operating system on it, doesn't it ?

ie A formatted \or non formatted HardDRive with nothing on it, wil say Boot fail of course

Thats another problem. I have tried to install window and when I put in the disk it gets to the install screen but never loads any options. I am pretty much just stuck at a black windows screen...
  3. kimsland Ex-TechSpotter

Usually is a sign of faulty HardDrive !!! (or configuration)

Mind you, I have seen a faulty CPU cause these issues
Hmm. You need to test with a known working HardDrive

Actually BenchTest would be the best thing for you
It's all in here:Tutorial: No POST (Power On System Test)

But this is a brand spanking new hard drive. I just bought it. How could it possible be faulty?
  5. kimsland Ex-TechSpotter

    Thanks for letting me know!

By the way, how's that reseating CPU going? (it's all in the guide)

I'm going to start in a moment... it's going to be a pain in the *** it looks like and I'm very afraid I'm going to ruin components by shocking them. Small place, so the only workable location is carpeted.

**** it, at this point I think I just need to take it into a shop and let people that know what they are doing work on it. I have by far exceeded the point where I still understand what I'm doing and I'm going to end up ruining it worse than I already have.

I appreciate your help a lot, but tomorrow I think I'm going to take it up to Best Buy and see if they can give me some personal help. I'm really afraid my frustration and lack of experience is going to create a bigger problem.
  9. kimsland Ex-TechSpotter

They'll probably find a data cable faulty or bios config fault (you know the 2 second job)

I already took everything out and re-plugged it... now I can't get the monitor working. You really think it's something that small that I'm just missing? I can start taking things out and re-assembling again if it's too costly to get personal help.
  11. kimsland Ex-TechSpotter

    Argh!

Is that an addon Video Card?
Do you have onboard Video too?
If so remove the Addon Video card (one screw, then there may be a clip, or push clip thingy at the end of the card)
Then plug the Monitor in the onboard Video connection
  12. JohnVace Newcomer, in training

No, just the one. But it's ok I got the monitor back online, I have some kind of physical connection issue with the monitor cables... really hard to get it back on but I got it. Now just back to the blank windows screen.
  13. kimsland Ex-TechSpotter

    Ok so lets refresh

    New HardDrive
    Put Windows CD in
    Boot Up
System Freeze, or it can't find disk message

    Tried Reset CMOS?
    Tried Cabling. (Replace?)

Actually what else, because this thread is big
  14. JohnVace Newcomer, in training

Ok, update to the window thing. I let it sit for about 7 minutes now and the page finally loaded the options. Seems like I was just being hasty because I was use to them popping up immidiately. Right now I'm at a 'Please Wait...' message, so I'm waiting for that to do something so I can try and set up windows on this hard drive.
  15. kimsland Ex-TechSpotter

Well that looks more and more like a CPU fault
  16. JohnVace Newcomer, in training

Hmmm... so you think there is something wrong with my CPU... how am I suppose to fix that?

Also, I'm further than I've been before in installing windows now. It actually detected drivers and is in the process of installing as we speak, albeit very slowly.
  17. kimsland Ex-TechSpotter

    We shall wait :) ...
  18. JohnVace Newcomer, in training

Aha! It seems to be working now. I have to re-install the drivers to get everything looking pretty again but I think it's ok now. Now... is there any way I can retrieve/fix my other hard drives or do I need to just let those go?
