Disk space being consumed by files that don't exist

Windows is running..but prompting up error of low disk space......or sometimes even critical disk space.

My bet is system recovery files. They can all be deleted, IF you are certain your system is good and uninfected. I think the procedure is just disable system restore, close down. Reboot and set system restore on again.

By the way, a drive like 200Gb and absolutely a 20Gb like the original poster, should most definitely be accompanied by a cheap, cheerful and very large USB drive. What - £50 for 300Gb ?? Then you can just turn off system restore for good, and before installing anything do proper system images on a routine basis to the USB backup drive. One day you will be on your knees blessing that approach....

OK Guys post #14 will fix the problem IF you have enough free disk space to even run the process. The Disk Cleanup program itself needs some free space to free up space!

Until you have it fixed as below, go to Services and Disable Volume Shadow copy!

IF you feel you can turn off System Restore that should do it but if you have program spewing out Shadow copies then it needs to be done quickly.

I advise go to Safe Mode only (not networking) and turn off SR then do the complete process in post #14.

Print post 14 to follow it correctly.

As soon as it is completed boot back to normal and in Services put Volume Shadow copy back to Manual and create a new SR point!

Your ball!!!!!!!

i tried deleting all the shadow copies and running the disk cleanup. it didn't help me get back my 46gigs :(
but, I've noticed that my free space drops ever so slowly(i check every time I'm on my PC) and the disk cleanup helps bring it back to where it was wen i first posted but thats all...

Got it Partially Fixed

Ahhh, it was the event logging thing..........I went to the BIOS setup and saw there is event logging which is enabled and that has been filling the disk space and it has filled in such a way that has created non-movable segments in C: Drive. Now I am thinking of removing these non-movable segments. Anybody can help on this????

What is going on ? I have been in IT for more than 30 years and never heard of a bios event log......except on specially-instrumented high-level file and application servers.

What is hassan talking about?

Well I am not an expert but I found event logging thing in BIOS setup of my computer, whatever this thing is but it is really crap for somebody who is just a user. I have Intel DP35DP board with 2.66 Duo Core Processor on it. After disabling this event logging my harddisk is not filling up which was happening earlier on. Later I tried to defragment C: drive but it is not defragmenting.............................poping up some file errors but it show a big portion of files those are not movable.

OK hassan

Yes Routers and other devices can save logs also tho I forget about these type of things.

Hassan if you have disk errors you can not defrag, and these should be deleted before defrag

Do the below

Boot to Safe Mode do my Disk cleanup procedure here hopefully you have enough free space for it to run and complete.

While still in Safe mode
Start-Run
type
chkdsk /r
It will want to do it on next boot so approve that and reboot.

Allow plenty of time for it to do this and it will finally boot back to normal.

Then try to delete these event logs again.

Then try the defrag.

Mike

Well what does tried mean??

You tried to run the process and it would not complete?

Mike
i deleted all the shadow copies and ran the disk cleanup. the process ran smoothly.and i did notice a small fragment of memory return to me but i did not get back my full 46gb. Is there anything else i could try?

I just had this problem and was googling for an answer when i figured out my solution.

Much like the original poster I have a laptop (DELL) and I was missing 7 GBs of space.

After running defrag, the results show files that it can't move. The location was:

C:\documents and settings\"USER"\temp

This was a hidden folder teaming with files that wanted to be deleted, 7 Gigs worth.

Hope this helps
