Domino's uses GPS mapping tech to deliver pizza without a physical address

In brief: Domino's has introduced a new option that allows customers to take delivery of an order nearly anywhere. It's called Domino's Pinpoint Delivery and as the name suggests, the option eliminates the need for a fixed address when placing an order. Using the Domino's app, you can simply drop a pin on a map and have your delivery driver bring your order at that exact location.

It may sound gimmicky, but the option could prove incredibly convenient. Imagine you are at the park, the beach, or the baseball fields when hunger strikes. Rather than having to pause the fun prematurely or pay exorbitant concession stand prices, you could have Domino's delivered on the spot.

You will need the Domino's app to place a Pinpoint Delivery order, and you will have to pre-pay using a credit, debit, or gift card (cash is not accepted). Users will receive text notifications providing status updates on their order. Once an order has been placed, the pickup location cannot be adjusted. When the driver arrives, you'll have four minutes to retrieve your order.

Most stores are already offering the new feature, and it is available for anyone with the mobile app to use. The company told Engadget that deliveries are possible anywhere a restaurant serves, so long as the driver can safely pull over. Don't expect your driver to hike a mountain to bring you a pizza, but they could meet you at the base of your hike or any other reasonable location.

Domino's is no stranger to leveraging technology for the benefit of its customers. In 2019, the company partnered with Chevrolet to let folks order pizza directly from their car's infotainment system. A couple of years later, the pizza specialist started delivering menu items using autonomous cars from Nuro. Delivery via aerial drones was also in the works but it seems Domino's may have abandoned those plans. That is not surprising considering drone delivery has proven much more difficult in practice than on paper.

One of my first jobs was delivering Pizza. It was before everyone had GPS, certainly not a Pizza guy making a little more than minimum wage. Perhaps uber wealthy had it then. Let me just say, this job must be so much easier these days. I remember having a huge map in store and having to remember all the turns I needed to take to get to a location, some of which were on backroads in the hills of TN. Worse, I was there for college so its not like I even lived there long and knew the roads.

Worse, I was there for college so its not like I even lived there long and knew the roads.

I was a county 911 dispatcher for 20 years. Started in the 80's with NO GPS. Getting directions from people was like pulling teeth! Now, before you even pick up the phone, you pretty much have their location, who the phone is registered to etc.

I bet this will end up leading to a incident or even murder. Dropping off a pizza but in a dark alley/place. Hopefully, they have some rules. Randomly dropping off a pizza with the way the world is, doesn't seem all that safe.

Here in the Philippines a lot of places don't have in-house delivery drivers anymore and use other services like Foodpanda or Grab

the dominos by me does use doordash people, thats why I stopped dealing with them, they dropped an order at another place then argued with me over it, so I just gave up and found better pizza spots.
