Droid Razr Maxx trumps the iPhone as Verizon's best-selling handset

Apple’s iPhone has been overtaken as the best-selling smartphone among the top three wireless carriers in the US, according to analyst Anil Doradla from William Blair & Company. In a note to investors this week, Doradla says that the Droid Razr Maxx has become the most popular handset among Verizon customers.

Doradla suspects the iPhone’s slip on Verizon isn’t related to customers holding out for the next generation model expected later this year but rather a heavy marketing campaign by the carrier to sell more 4G LTE devices like the Razr Maxx.

CNET writer Eric Mack said Verizon’s push to get customers to buy LTE products lines up with his own personal experience as he was directed towards the 4G Razr and Galaxy Nexus after asking about the iPhone 4S when calling the carrier earlier this year. The customer service rep was reportedly quick to point out the iPhone’s lack of 4G LTE compatibility.

Despite the slip on Verizon, the analyst isn’t concerned about Apple’s prospects for the future. The new iPhone is expected to ship with a 4G radio, leading Doradla to believe that it will be an important catalyst for Apple. Furthermore, he reiterates his Outperform rating on Apple shares.

For what it’s worth, the iPhone is still the top selling smartphone at both AT&T and Sprint. On Verizon, the Galaxy Nexus ranked third in Doradla’s “checks.” It’s unclear exactly what methods he used to gather sales information for his investor report.

What I think is surprising is that it's the RAZR Maxx. That extra battery in the Maxx costs an additional $100 last I checked. There are many phones with 4G, but this goes to show how much people value battery life.

Mike, thanks very much for the tip. I just got a Samsung Galaxy Nexus a couple of days ago. This is my first smartphone and I was shocked at how much juice was used with the phone in 'normal' mode. As a new user, do you have any other suggestions for apps that might help me determine what I can 'turn off' with respect to my data? I am finding that my 2 GB a month ain't gonna cut it.

Nothing general (that I know of), no. Each app kinda does it's own thing. The Pro version ( think) of JuiceDefender allows you to block internet access to any app individually, either when the screen is on or off. Works great for game apps that only use your connection to download ads. Otherwise you'll have to config each app on it's own. Like Pulse (best news app I've seen) will drain your battery really fast if you allow auto-updating (especially if you have a slow connection *cough* SPRINT). There's a setting to make it auto-update only over wi-fi. You can also set JD to enable wifi based on your location.

I used to use an extended battery with my EVO 4G until I got juice defender and noticed I was going to bed with 80% battery left. The most I'll ever use in a month is 500MB (on pace for about 150MB this month) but Sprint's 3g network is so slow that I don't do much online with my phone away from home. But... I don't see a difference in usage when I look at my history from before or after I started using JD.

I would also recommend fine tuning the data usage options within settings. Since the galaxy nexus is running android 4.0 ICS you can set limits to how much data a specific app uses in a month. I have found this feature to be the best for monitoring your mobile data usage. Other then that I would recommend connecting your phone to wifi networks as much as possible.

Not surprising. The Razr Maxx is better in so many important ways. And once it finally gets ICS it'll be a truly unstoppable phone.
