Dual Monitor Help

I tried connecting a second monitor to my laptop for a dual-monitor setup and my laptop froze. I restarted it and it took around 20 minutes to start up Windows. I shutdown the computer which also took an extreme amount of time, and unplugged the second monitor then started my laptop up again and it still took 20 minutes.

I have tried 2 system restores from different points but both of them failed. I have also tried running a chkdsk from the command prompt but it did not solve the problem.

My laptop is a Gateway P-Series running Windows Vista Home Premium and the monitor is a Hewlett Packard HP L1710. The monitor is only a few days old and the laptop is less than a year old.

is that laptop capable of running dual monitors? Once it is booted up, can you make it to the display properties? If so, check the settings tab and make sure it is set back to single monitor mode. Also, have you checked the event viewer to see what is goin on?
