I've had a crappy BDV-108A (8x DVD) drive for a couple of years now (it came with my old computer)..

Recently its had trouble opening - gets stuck, so you have to pull it open

more worringly, it won't read DVD's anymore...

Is there anything I can do?

EDIT: Interestingly, under my computer it appears as "CD Drive" rather than "DVD Drive" [WinXP Pro] - but it has an option under properties to select DVD region....hmmm

I know I could just buy a new DVD drive for £30, but if I can fix the problem that would be cheaper.....

    Thanks.

That happened to a DVD drive of mine.

It could only read CDs and DVDs were spat back out.

    I binned it.

It is possible it could have just needed cleaning, but I doubt it.

    weird.

I re-install WinDVD, and it suddenly recognises DVD's again. :p Before it wouldn't even recognise data DVD's.

Good job you never followed my advice and put it in the bin, then.

That could be an ASPI problem, or something similar on a low level.

The drive in my example would not physically take a DVD, it would eject it immediately, indicating a serious hardware fault.

This sounds like my problem, but mine's a little different, Window's says that my DVD drive is a CD Drive, and I got it to play movie DVD's but I can not get it to read data DVD's. Do I need a DVD Burner to read Data DVD's? Any help would help me a lot. Thanks

    I bought a DVD-RW recently for AUD$60! Bargain (& thats an ASUS)

Cheap as chips really ... :grinthumb
