I have an HP Pavilion laptop with MS Vista and last month the DVD stopped working, no DVD icon in system properties or device manager. I read somewhere that it maybe a vista conflict. MS support could not help me. Is anyone aware of this problem and a fix

I think it's more likely the DVD drive simply failed.

    I agree with mailpup.

If the DVD device is physically there Windows will detect it and the device will appear in somewhere in device manager

    Only things left:
    > Reseat the DVD. Make sure it's making good contact
    > Check the cable connections are tight
    > Check BIOS. make sure it's not somehow been disabled in BIOS

    Otherwise, it's kaput :dead:
