A DVD writer is also a DVD reader, so you should be able to.

hmm, then i must be having a problem installing it, i am putting it in my old dvd roms slot so do i have to change anything in the bios or should windows recognize it and change it?

If you haven't already, check the jumper setting at the back of the optical drive. Set it to whatever the old DVD-ROM was. Your choices are master, slave and cable select.
