DVR without monthly service

  1. Hey everybody.. Does anyone know about a DVR that does not require a monthly service fee? I was doing some research because I wanted to buy a TiVO or some similar DVR but they require a subscription service. I don't live in USA so any DVR with that monthly service won't work for me. My Cable provider in Ecuador does have a set-top-box with DVR capability but it is really expensive and doesn't even have HD recording, so any suggestion will be welcome.

You should be able to make scheduled recordingds with the software supplied with an add-in tuner, (Either PCI or USB) You could feed the tuned fromthe cable box (worst case, only if scrambled) or from an antenna or unscrambed cable feed.

You would need to set the computer to wake from either a PCI or USB event and not shut the box down, only use the standby.
