SimCity, one of the most anticipated releases of the year, launched in the US early this morning but that doesn’t mean everyone that purchased the game got to play it right away. The title, which requires EA’s Origin PC download...

  2. This just provides why no one should buy this game with always on DRM. My childhood was simcity 2000. I am going to have to pass on this one though.

"The title, which requires EA?s Origin PC download client to operate even in single player mode, was seemingly met with much higher demand than anticipated, causing Origin?s servers to crumple under the pressure."

Hey Bob, how many people are going to be downloading on release?

Oh you know, 10-15. That'll do it.

What if they can't get on?

We'll have their money already... so um... yeah. We'll have their money...

Brilliant. They enforce this shitty DRM, but they can't properly support it.

    Morons.

Yet another perfect example of Always Online DRM failing
Yet they keep persisting with it

This is one good reason why always online scheme fails.
even diablo 3 always has a downtime in which case blizzard says "for maintenance".

on a similar note, cloud services also suffer outages.

This has nothing to do with always-on DRM. Not allowing pre-loads is the bigger factor and it was a really dumb decision. Even if the DRM was the sole issue, there's not really an incentive to be proactive when it comes to the launch day rush. Gamers will whine because #firstworldproblems, but it will be fixed and they'll play their game and all will be forgotten quickly.

So even though th is is on Steam, I have to use Origin to play?

I'm renting from a company who is renting the game on my behalf....?

People are having to get in queues to *play* the single player game. Sorry but I've never heard of a WORSE single player experience than this. To be honest I didn't know it was now a competition to see who could make the single player experience as bad as possible for paying customers.

Only reason I didn't buy this game was Origin and their BS DRM, looks like I was right to not trust them. Oh wait, its EA, who trust them anymore? The real shame is it looks like it could be a fun game and I still do want to play it. Just going to have to wait for the DRM/Origin Free release on TPB. See EA this is what DRM makes people do, it pissed them off to the point where its more practical to just downright pirate your software that has been patched free of inconvenience rather than being inconvenienced in the first place.

And they wonder why people pirate the games...Stick with BF series folks. Sim City crap is for girls and people with integrated graphics only lol.

I find it double hilarious, because pirates have been playing this with no problems for probably the past month. :D

As always, your comments are ridiculous. Why hate on the game?

If the server is down why dont these people just join a European server? Or Oceanic 1?
    They are always open.

Because you can't transfer your game from one to another. No saving. My city is on North America West so that's the only server I can use unless I want to start from scratch. Just wait for tomorrow when the European servers go down too.

Yea but my understanding was that that they couldnt get on from the start without ever getting a first play in.

As an older gamer, some of these new games look interesting. But my experience with online registration, activations, Origin, etc. has turned me right off. Even the Steam version of GTAIV I bought has a loader, nags me to register, and won't save without a GFWL log in.

Unfortunately not, the pirate community might not see a hack for this for awhile, I guess a simple emulation won't work and pirates will have to reverse engineer a certain part of the game.

It's a shame, I really want to play this, but It seems I will have to wait either until EA fixes their **** (I realllly don't want to support EA) or the pirates figure it out.
