Hi, I'd first like to thank who ever decides to dedicate time to this post, they are greatly appreciated. In any case, I turned on my laptop one day to find a blank desktop with only the background wallpaper. I first thought that it was just my laptop being dumb for some reason, and i searched online for solutions to getting it back. Easily enough, all I had to do was run explorer.exe to get the desktop back, but that did not solve the problem as i had to manually run explorer.exe every time i turned my laptop on. So then I decided to do a system restore, which fixed the explorer.exe problem. After this though, McAfee started giving multiple alerts on some trojan. I ran a scan with McAfee and Malwarebytes, both found the same files and deleted them. Then some time later the same alerts popped up again. I am not sure how to solve this so i looked online again and here i am... My laptop is running Windows XP. Infections found via McAfee: Generic.dx!tfu Generic PUP.x!cx Generic downloader I have searched these up on the McAfee Virus encyclopedia. Generic PUP has pretty much no information and seems to have been added to the encyclopedia recently, which has me worried of it being a new virus or something. I have done the 8 preliminary steps and have attached the documents. I also have Superantispyware, which i have ran a scan with after the 8 steps and have found nothing. I also ran hijackthis and included the a file with the details it provided. I downloaded ComboFix but I have not used it yet as I don't know what it is/does... (and i see that i shouldn't run it unless told to do so after reading a previous post) So what is my situation here? I hope my situation is totally screwed over. I don't use my laptop for any banking or personal information. I have entered in such information but that was a long time ago (before the infection). Thank you for your time! Sorry for the long post.
