Is it really normal that explorer.exe eats up a lot of memory? currently it tells me that it used 44,432K of memory, I saw it through task manager. Is this normal? How am I suppose to lessen this?

Yes that's about normal

Explorer is basically Windows Gui and the main part of Windows

You can reduce it, by removing as many non needed services as possible (including Startups, right click menus, running programs... ) a whole range of possibilities to optimize, even in the registry.

You could start here: http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm
