External hard disk problems

Hey,

I have a Maxtor 200GB ONETOUCH II hard drive and it shows up in My Computer, but when I click on it, it says hard disk is ot accessible, the file or directory is corrupted and unreadable. I have years of school papers and stuff on this...How do I get it back? Someone please help, freaking out here. By the way, I am running windows server, I have not been able to find any software that is compatible, so leave suggestions please.

Try the thing with another computer or at least another operating system (a Live CD?).

Take the hard drive out of the enclosure and see if it works when connected directly inside a computer.

ZAR lets you restore 4 folders at a time for free I believe, so you can throw that at the disk when everthing else fails.

Next time, make backups of your important stuff
