External hard drive/computer problems

  1. I had a Seagate FreeAgent Go, my computer stopped recognizing it/letting me use it. It would show up on the icon next to the clock and let me eject the drive but it would not show up in my computer or in disk manager. It did however, work normally if I plugged it in before I turned on the computer. I purchased a new external hard drive (WD My Passport Essential) thinking the it was a problem with the external.

    I am having the same problems with my new external drive as I was having with the old one. I have ran virus scans and have not had any luck getting either to work properly.
    I'm wondering if this is a problem with my computer considering the new drive isn't working either or if it is a setting that got changed accidentally. Any help would be great.
