External Maxtor hard drive problem

hey, I have a External Maxtor 750GB OneTouch 4 Plus drive and I slightly bumped it over the other day while watching a video on it. Now when I plug in my drive it says in the task manager "new hardware found" (im using XP by the way) but when I go to device manager I can't seem to find the drive. My drive now makes beeping and grinding noises for the first three minuets when I give power to it but the drive still seems to spin. Is there much I can do to possibly get my data back besides taking the case apart and plugging it in internally?

It sounds like the hard drive itself is damaged and not the enclosure. If so, installing it internally won't do any good. You could always try the freezer trick but I'm not so sure it will work here but you have nothing to lose. If your data if particularly valuable, there is always professional data recovery services. On the other hand if your data was that valuable, likely you would have your data backed up.
