Facebook messenger chat sound not sent from a particular Windows PC

I can hear the correspondent, but she cannot hear me. I cannot identify a Windows setting for sending sound.
Apart from this, the sound (and everything else) works. The problem also occurs in WhatsApp, but that is from the same stable, so doesn't prove very much. I don't use any other chat application.
