Grand Theft Auto III is set to be released in the PSN store tomorrow as part of the PlayStation 2 Classics series but before you get your hopes up, it’s worth pointing out that there is no HD support or trophy system to speak of. $10 will get you the standard game as it shipped in 2001 but if that simply isn’t good enough, you might want to wait for a fan remake that’s well under way.

Grand Theft Auto III: Rage Classic is everything you know and love about the revolutionary game – in HD. That’s right; the title is being converted to run on the GTA IV game engine. The cars reportedly drive better while on-foot combat isn’t nearly as difficult as it once was. The trailer below is a good indication of how the project is progressing thus far.

The remake is being done by the same crew that worked on the Vice City Rage and San Andreas Rage projects. The forum thread for the project was started last July but currently doesn’t have a release date for the first beta. Those interested in learning more should check out the 80-page thread for more details.

Of course, there’s always the Android and iOS versions of the game available that both feature higher-resolution graphics and award systems but not everyone will want to play on a tablet or phone.

Wait... so how is this relevant to PSN users? Surely the mod won't be available on PlayStation... before mentioning the mod it should say "but PC users can look forward to".

Wow, that looks pretty cool.

Mods are really great things. Its like taking an old car, stripping it down to a frame, and putting it back together with brand new components, and brand new upholstery and paint. It looks like the old car, but its so much more bad-*** to drive and enjoy.

Pretty clever move by GTA fanboys. More or less, it made me agitated for GTA V since the release is pretty much next year.

Why dont they just go to rockstar games and the take two corporation and make an anniversery edition like halo did?
