Framework will not install

I am running windows xp...was notified by pop up window that updates for Framework.net is available for download.
When it says it is installing.it doesn't! I waited over an hour thinking maybe it is just damn slow....but it never installed.
Any advice as to what to do would be appreciated.

Is your copy of XP fully updated to Service Pack 3? .Net Framework takes a long time to install on slower computers. You may have to shut down and/or restart for it to install completely

dot Net Framework now has 4+ versions and at times it gets painfull to update.
When updating 3.5, I had to uninstall all prior version in reverse order,
download and update each in assending order to finally get 3.5 updated.

Consequently, I have not installed v4 and frankly, not seen a need for ANY of them (yet).

I think dot net 4 is for Windows 7 only (don't know about Vista) and dot Net 3.5 is incremented in steps for XP only

.NET 4 is for XP SP3 and newer ( http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=17851 ).

Not in my experience with XP Service Pack 3 here in the USA
