    Which version?
The Dark Project was a blast for me. I loved the "First Person Sneaker" attitude rather than just who shoots first.

I agree with Thomas. Operation Flashpoint IS the game of the year. I believe it has at least 8 major GOTY awards. Ghost Recon has one from PCGamer.

Ghost Recon is just Rainbow6 outside. Operation Flashpoint is a very accessible full spectrum combined arms lite simulation of war. It is currently my favorite game. COOP is incredible!!

I have both of 'em ( 1 gold & 2 ) but I don't think they're contestants for last year's game of the year ( even less for this year ).

If we are talking about 2001, I would put my vote on Return to Wolfenstein or Medal of Honor. But then again, Those two games are what I like in a game. Any thoughts ?

I think RtCW is very good, one of the best games in 2001. I only have the demo of MOH:AA so I can't comment that much. So far so good.

MOH:AA I feel is a little shorter (single player of course) but its worth getting it if you have a decent graphics card just to play the omaha beach level :) Its a stunner.
I really like the AI comrades you get in some missions and the lack of "zombies" made it more believable. Also the sound for all the weapons is stunning, that and driving around in a King Tiger tank blowing up buildings is quite fun too....

I agree with you Arris, I only played the demo but all my friends who played said it was great just a bit short on levels. I liked the demo alot, just haven't had the chance to go buy it yet.

Details of MOH:AA and Ghost Recon games endings coming up in this post. Look away if you don't want to know about them (even though there isn't much revealed apart from their lameness, scroll down the post if you want to continue reading - Arris

and the ending sucks! you just jump on the train and... THE END!?
com'on! why can't they torture their brain cells a bit more and come up with a summary of the war or stuff like that!? :dead:
just like Ghost Recon... it's like "oh yeah! the game's finished! lets just put up 'THE END', show the credits screen and go out to have some beer!" :puke:

Yeah there is nothing in gaming that makes me madder than a lame ending. Was it Doom that at the end when you defeted the satan thing, just when you got the warm and fuzzies, you walked up the stairs and thought the game was gonna be over and you where attacked and the game ended with you being the looser ? Which then lead into Doom 2. If I remember just before the credits rolled it says something like "what's this, you thought you could win, you thought it would be different ?" That was a good ending....made me come back for more.....

Hehe, this is a great topic in it's own right - the best and worst endings ever.

"ONCE YOU BEAT THE BIG BADGUYS AND CLEAN OUT THE MOON BASE YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO WIN, AREN'T YOU? AREN'T YOU? WHERE'S YOUR FAT REWARD AND TICKET HOME? WHAT THE HECK IS THIS? IT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO END THIS WAY!

IT STINKS LIKE ROTTEN MEAT, BUT LOOKS LIKE THE LOST DEIMOS BASE. LOOKS LIKE YOU'RE STUCK ON THE SHORES OF HADES. THE ONLY WAY OUT IS THROUGH.

TO CONTINUE THE DOOM EXPERIENCE, PLAY THE SHORES OF HADES AND ITS AMAZING SEQUEL, INFERNO!"

And Inferno ended with happy music and a pan over green fields -then the music turned insane and you saw a ruined, burning city followed by a bunny head on a stake.

Medal of Honor would be GOTLY but was released in 2k2, so doesn't count. My vote goes to RTCW, even though it was a bit of a disappointment. As for flashpoint, no jump key, shot instantly - need I say more?

I myself prefer the half way realism of MOH but flashpoint is much more of a simulation than a game. Its acutally being used for training of team leaders in the US Forces from what I remember. I have played a little of Flashpoint and it is a good product but I think the likes of Ghost Recon, MOH and RTCW found favor with gamers because of the easy learning curve and instant playability which when you have a game AI team leader shouting "Enemy soldier at 7 O'Clock, Soldier 1 take him out" you first think "My 7 O'Clock or his?", "Where's 12 O'Clock? I am disorientated". It just doesn't have the same appeal ;)

See now thats a good enging, one that you don't see comming, your right, thats what it said there.

I also like the middle of Half Life where Gordon goes thru the door and is attacked in total darkness.

In Half Life Blue Shield, there is a level where you are locked in a closet, if you jump up on the box and look out the window, you see the guards dragging gordon off.

Duke nukem 3d should be the best game of the year 2001

That is because DNF is not out yet, giving them the title would perhaps give them the incentive to start coding and stop dragging their feet. GEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZZZZZZZZZZE!!!!
  15. boeingfixer Newcomer, in training Posts: 1,245

Even though I am a big Duke fan, game of the year 2001 it should not get, mabee GOTY 1995 or 96, If they wait to many more years, no one is gonna remember who Duke was.

Allthough a lame ending is bad, reading about it before getting to it sucks a lot too. Might want to warn about spoilers next time :dead:
  17. boeingfixer Newcomer, in training Posts: 1,245

Mabee you should have not read it then ?? :) ;)
  18. Arris TechSpot Evangelist Posts: 4,305   +17

Well what about people that haven't finished Doom :haha:
Its not that bad saying that it finishes with "The End". Its not like reading the last page of a book to someone...
I'm sure nobody will stop playing just cause they know that both games have "The End" at the end of them ;)
  19. Epidemic Newcomer, in training

now duke 3d had an ending. It was explained in the beginning.
A threat made by the nukester himself.

Now that was an innovative end and one the 3d realms should be proud of.

"im gonna --- off ---- ---- and ---- down ---- ---- for taking our women"

Vote for Duke 3d to give them the incentive to finish their current project DNF. Hey I am not getting any younger here.

DNF for 2001 best game. because no one has come up with such a colorfull ending.
  20. Ai Hate Newcomer, in training Posts: 321

it's not that bad, but it just doesn't reward the player for spending days to finish the game. when it's finished, i go "huh? it's finished???"
endings don't have to be some classy CG movie, just sth to wrap up the whole story...
from all the games i played, Ghost Recon and MOH:AA are the games with the worst endings (but the gameplay is very good).
