Gateway 450ROG display issues

  1. I have a couple of video display issues on my Gateway 450ROG laptop.

1 - My LCD screen is too dark to use. I can see the outline of open windows on the dark screen, but it is too dark and therefore unusable. Any suggestions?

As a result, I am using an external monitor, but...

2 - The display does not size properly on my external monitor.

a - I have adjusted the screen resolution (to 1400 by 1050 pixels via Display Properties), but cannot the the task bar to size properly. I was hoping to turn off LCD screen and just use eternal monitor (until I fix the above), but cannot find the Graphics Options -> Output To menu via a right click on my desktop. Any suggestions?

Any help with either of mine above would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried installing the latest video drivers?

    Yes.

The good news is that the display on my external monitor is now sized properly.

The bad news is that I cannot play any avi (or other video) files?

    Any suggestions?!?

    Many thanks.
