I have a bfg 6800gt oc in this box and a Radeon 9800 pro in another...this box always works...the box with the 9800 has an issue with killing signal to the monitor, causing reboots and lockups...I guess my vote will go to the 6800gt!

    Check the mobo chipset drivers.
A vid card will not terminate a signal to the monitor.
A motherboard will. Bios issues -Software/driver conflicts.
A reboot has never been caused by a video card in the history of p.c's.
More then likely power supply- underwattage not enough power.
Lock ups? Could be Memory related- Not enough of it - or could be the software interface between the o.s and the board otherwise known as drivers.
The mobo northbridge/agp software installed correctly? (via sis intel# Nforce)
Try swapping boards vid cards and ram dimms see if the problem is the board itself.
Try a format. and get away from windows xp if you have it . 2000 pro is the only x86 o.s u will ever need. Try not to blame hardware for your lack of hardware/troubleshooting knowledge. :D

Well all the drivers are recent, I don't run xp on that box and it is a freshly built system. Clean HDD, new psu, I don't have any extra memory modules to try unfortunatly thats the only thing this box needs. As far as troubleshooting knowledge I believe I know enough to troubleshoot issues as that was what I did professionaly until I became disabled. I don't however keep up with certain hardware manufacturers as well as I should because I never intended to buy their products, just in this case I didn't want to spent the money needed for a decent p4 system and a 6800gt.

My apologies for that last post of mine.
Im sorry to sound off like that at you. I never meant it that way.
1 out of 4 posts people are always blaming problems on the the new part they just bought on a whim. They havent taken the time to research it and see what way it will interact with their current hardware config - sometimes they keep old stagnant drivers from older hardware on the o.s lol - so they just go buy it cause it the best and "must be the best cause it was the most expensive on the place had" - rich yuppies lolol. A good carpenter never blames his tools :)

    Cheers

Exactly, ATi is supposed to be better for D3D, nVidia for OpenGL.

And as far as I know Far Cry runs in D3D by default, although you can change it to OpenGL. I had a 9700 Pro in my machine and now have a BFG 6800 GT OC, and with both cards D3D ran much better with this game, I had a lot of problems running it with OpenGL. That's not to say OpenGL is worse in all games, as MOHAA, Call of Duty, and others run great on either card. I dare say there's not enough difference in either ATi or nVidia, in equal performing cards, to tell the difference.

As far as who has the best drivers, I haven't had an issue with either one, they both perform pretty good for me. I must say I kind of like ATi's strategy of releasing one driver a month, and no beta drivers. With nVidia, seems like there is only an official driver every four months or so, with a new "leaked" beta driver almost bi-weekly, or so it seems.

I was thinking about using the ati omega drivers?
    Have u ever used them?

    Comp Usa???

    Kevin,

If you're still reading this, are you trying to waste your money? Comp USA is probably the most expensive place to buy computer parts. It's absolutely guaranteed that you can find the cards much cheaper online. Try www.newegg.com.

DUDE!!! The Geforce is much better. First of all, it is PCI-Express. The Radeon is only AGP 4x...which sucks. BUT you also have to make sure you have a PCI-E slot in your motherboard. If you don't have one...then don't go for the Radeon because its only 4x...get an AGP 8x at least.

Edit: Oh nvm I didn't read down to the second line that is a AGP 8x card lol well thats ok but the geforce should still be better...

Hey Easy. Yeah, I've used them several times with no problems. I guess I've tried about every modded driver for ATi and nVidia, and for the most part had no problems. But in all honesty, I don't see much difference in them and the regular drivers.

Go with the 6600 GT it will last you longer as more games are coming out that need more juice. As for DOOM 3, 6600 GT will beat 9800 Pro pretty soundly as the DOOM 3 engine is really tuned up for the Nvidia 6 series of cards. I would spend the extra money and get a 6600 GT though i previously had a 9800 pro card and i never had any issues with it (omega driver) i just recently upgraded to NVidia. here is a link of benchmarks for you:

By the way the 6600 GT is capable of handling the unreal 3 engine as well according to the notes from the GDC 2005 and games with this engine will be coming out in Q1 2006.

K you need to learn something. . . 40-50 FPS is NOT a slideshow. 1-10 fps is a slideshow. 11-20 is bad, 21-35 is medium and 35+ is pretty good. . .

I'd go with the 6600 gt even though every vid card I've owned has been ATI. The 6600 gt has pixel shader 3.0 support and would be more future proof.

ROFL... Have you EVER played a video game with graphics before? You noticed the 3 in Doom3, right? If you can run doom3 at 35 frames per second, and still enjoy whats going on, you have some serious mental lag. So I suggest this, MetalX, you need to learn something... Dukenukem 3d no longer sets the standards for video gaming, 50-60 frames per second is what the average gamer is content to run, (depending on the game of course), letalone being happy with 35 frames per second.

Please, take a look at benchmarks, and read reviews on products before you offer your advice this forum again?

I don't play First Person Shooters so i dont really notice it like that. . . so thats how it is to me. Even if i wanted to play FPS games, im 13 and my mom wouldnt let me. Ok, Ok so maybe im the one who needed to learn. . .

    reply to question

choose the 660gt. I own an Oc version of the 6600gt and my friend has a 9800 pro in his computer. my card doubles his at least, and the pixel shader 3.0 is a big improvement over 2.0 if you are going to run new games like fear or quake 4
