Google Nexus 7 web traffic up 135 percent since July

Google’s Nexus 7 tablet is beginning to show up on the proverbial web traffic radar following its release a few months ago. According to new data released by advertising firm Chitika, Google’s share of tablet traffic has shot up 135 percent since July and now holds the fourth position among Android tablets. It’s a solid start, of course, as everyone has to start at zero in the beginning.

Despite the early success, web traffic from tablets continues to be a one-sided affair in favor of Apple. The company’s iPad accounted for over 90 percent of all tablet traffic according to Chitika’s last count. In fact, the firm was forced to represent other tablet impressions in terms of impressions per 100 iPads, as seen in the chart below.

Android’s most popular web surfing tablet is the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 followed by the Barnes & Noble Nook. Here we see the Google Nexus 7 ranked just after the Galaxy Tab 7 at 0.85 impressions per 100 iPad impressions.

As Chitika points out in their report, the tablet market has seen some major changes over the past year and even the past few days. Google’s Nexus 7, Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD and the Barnes & Noble Nook have all helped to validate the 7-inch marketplace.

Things will become even more interesting as we wrap up 2012. Apple’s new iPad mini will challenge the aforementioned 7-inch tablets while Microsoft will no doubt put a dent in the full-size iPad’s dominance in the 10-inch market.

135 percent since July looks pretty bad. The Nexus 7 started selling mid-July, and if we assume that web traffic is representative of the number of devices sold, it means that over 40% of Nexus 7 units were sold in July, less than 60% in the 2.5 months after that.
