GTA IV framerate problem

Hi,

I've been a a fan of GTA series for a while now and played the heck out of many of them, so I was looking forward to 4th part. But when it came out my system was not up to notch, but even so I've managed to play some part of it having rather low performance.

But a week ago I've gotten a better laptop and I was rather exited to finally play it. But I seem to have almost the same performance as I used to before while game barely uses any resources.

This is my latest try with all medium and shadows off. I've also turned off any background program I didn't need and in options menu it says "resource use: 309/1010".

The funny thing is that I can't move anywhere from 16 fps mark. It was the same on all high with browser and skype running in the background and it's the same now.

I have a fresh 4 day old install of Windows on formatted HDD, all drivers installed, fresh install of GTA with all the patches (7 right? all I found) so i just don't know.

AS I've said before, it barely uses any resources. I mean people say it's CPU intensive, but it's not going past 36% even on all high.Memory and video are around 77% on high and fps is still 16.

Also I have rather annoying screen tearing in the benchmark test, even with vsync on.

I'm not sure how much It might help but you could try turning video recording off in the game options section (same one that has start new game and load game), doing that usually increases my framerate by 20 or 30%. I don't think that video cards particularly powerful though, that's probably whats holding the system back the most.

I think you might give this mod a shot though. Before I upgraded my system GTAIV didn't run so well for me (between 20 and 30FPS) but then saw this while browsing a mod site and the creator claimed it made the game seem like it was running smoother because of the motion blur effect. I decided to give it a shot and got surprising results, the game actually looked like it was running smoother but Fraps showed that it was running 1 or 2 frames per second slower.

I just tried it with the latest version and it seems to run just fine and I didn't have to use the magic IV patch, I just used the "Instruction for patch 1.0.2.0 - 1.0.4.0 SINGLEPLAYER users" and I think I have the latest version of the game. You might try out the different tweaks, start with tweak 6 then try all the others and see which one you like best.

Note: I would recommend that before you install it (or any mods) you make a copy of your entire GTAIV installation, it's a lot faster to move/delete an altered/messed up installation and copy/move the copy back to the Rockstar games folder then it is to reinstall and download all the patches again. I think you will run into problems if you try to play with a modded version in multiplayer but if you make a full backup you can always swap the 2 installations out when you want to play online.
 
Disabling clip capture did not seem to do much and I can't use that tweak, since I've got version 1.0.7 while it supports only till the previous one.

Actually I downloaded and installed the older version (not even the one for 1.0.6.0 and it still worked with 1.0.7.0 just fine. As long as you back up the game it can't hurt to try the mod.
 
Hmm, it seems there was a problem with supporting my resolution. I've dropped it down from 1336 to 1024 and now I play at around 30 fps.
