Hal.dll file missing or corrupt/recovery console won't load

  1. Hello board, you've saved me in the past, let's see if someone can do it again.....my hard drive crashed, telling me that my hal.dll file was corrupted or missing. I've found numerous fixes for this problem using the windows recovery console. The problem I have is that the recovery console doesn't work! At the screen where it tells you to press enter to reinstall or press r for repair, whatever you choose, it goes to a blank blue screen with a line on the bottom telling me it's examining my hard drive (or scanning, I can't remember which....at work, right now) and then.....it stays there....for hours.

anything I can do? or is the hard drive just lost?

thanks in advance for any help!
