I have tried everything but everytime I boot up my computer I get this hardware configuration error any suggestions on what I should or can do?

What operating system do you use, and what is the brand and model, or configuration of your computer. What tasks are you running when you get the hardware configuration error... or does it even boot.
Tell us as much as you can, so we can imagine what you are up against.

well now it doesn't even get past the boot screen I tried to use the Windows xp installation disk but it isnt reading the disk. Then I tried to change some things in the setup and that doesnt work either.

You need to debug the HDD and do it by booting from resource CD/DVD, and I believe you have all the CDs for computer,
In that you must be having Drivers and utility or one says resoruce CD, put in inside - right so you can do it. there is command for SATA debug I pasted the source.
Call computer technical help to help you for the same if you are not finding it out easy this way, you must be having SATA DRIVE, so do Sata debug.
