    my computer won't start when my hardrive is inserted and when i insert it while it's open my computer shuts down on it's own

    Good drive. One of the best, for reliability. Known for lasting as much as five years.
    Check all your cables. Be sure everything is properly seated. Check your jumper, and change it to Master if it is now CS or Cable Select.
    Has it been used in another computer?
    It may be infested, or another commponent may be bad.
    Have you tried a cold boot in SAFE MODE (Pressing F8 repeatedly about once per second as soon as you depress the ON button)?
