HDD damaged; recoverable?

Hi

I have a seagate HDD thats been working fine for >6 years now, with Windows 2000 and XP.

A little while ago it started making a noise [like wind blowing thru a small opening] on PC startup ... it used to hang for about 2 seconds but then start working again. This continued for a while till recently when the PC stopped 'seeing' it at all. Now when the PC starts I still hear the same noise but after a while everything is silent and the PC cannot boot from it.

What are my (cheap) options if any to copy data from this to another HDD?

at this point "cheap" doesn't come to mind. you should have thought about backing up when you first hear sounds coming form the HDD not after it dies. you can get one of these Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 160GB 7200 RPM IDE $43.99. put the new HDD as a master and the old HDD as slave.now install windows on the new HDD. if the old HDD shows up in windows we can go from there
